“Well-behaved women rarely
make history.”

When we women are excited,
upset, passionate, angry, hurt, or expressive in any way, we are
accused of being emotional. What woman hasn’t been asked if it
is “that time of the month” when she’s angry or even sticking up
for herself? It is commonly inferred that women who won’t ignore
comments that are petty and demeaning must be “on the rag” or
about to be. We are taught to swallow these comments because “it
was just a joke” or “it’s no big deal.” But what seems to get
lost is that all of these comments ARE a big deal because they
add up to our low sense of self-worth.
Women do not lose their
balance by allowing themselves to feel, experience and be guided
by the emotions they were born with. It’s our dissatisfaction
with ourselves and each other that keeps us off balance ... not
our emotions.
Society will continue to
feed us and future generations of women exactly how it thinks we
should be ... and women will continue to help perpetuate these
self-destructive views ... until we decide what is good, bad,
right or wrong for women. And I am convinced that punishing
ourselves for being emotional is not in any way helpful.
