It's not surprising that fear arises
when we see or, worse yet, experience natural disasters like
the recent ones in Japan and New Zealand. At the same time,
I know how destructive it is to live in fear. As I was grappling
with finding the words to write about this myself, Vicky White
shared her own perspective and I couldn't do better than this.

Christchurch, Japan, what's really going on?
Before I knew it, I could feel myself
being sucked in. Our media here in New Zealand is still full
of the Christchurch earthquake (and now the Japanese one).
Everywhere you look there is news repeating itself, death
tolls, stories of suffering, and a huge focus on devastation.
And even future predictions -- you should hear what they're
saying about Wellington!
When we had two moderate sized earthquakes
in Wellington the week after the Christchurch one, I found
myself looking around at where I was staying and picturing
the house falling off the side of the hill.
In Canada, I don't read papers any more
or watch TV. I've managed to stay away from economic gloom
and doom, but I often feel I'm doing the ostrich thing of
sticking my head in the sand. I've searched for a way to have
a more inspired approach. As I noticed myself starting to feel
nervous about earthquakes in New Zealand and overwhelmed by the
devastation in Japan, I realized there was another way.
Rather than cutting my attention off
completely, I can choose where I put my attention and find
the gifts in it while sending love to those involved. [Read more...]
