PAINTED TOE NAILS
“The message we give our
bodies -- one of irritation or acceptance -- is the message to
which our bodies will answer.”
-- Debbie Shapiro
At a
women’s retreat I attended, someone suggested we paint each
other’s toe nails. The idea instantly caught fire and soon
almost everyone was engaged in a frenzy of laughter and preening
as they adorned their feet with glorious shades of polish.
I didn’t
participate – I didn’t much care for my feet at that time and I
wasn’t about to have anyone get too close. But I found myself
utterly captivated by the beauty and delight of my companions
joyfully celebrating themselves and each other.
Prior to
this, I’d viewed cosmetics as a tool used primarily to attract
the attention of men. Here, though, those dozens of painted toes
danced in the sheer glory of being.
It’s taken
years, but I now honour my feet and even show them off
occasionally with painted nails.
