DANCING BY MYSELF

“Every dance is a kind of fever chart, a graph of the heart.”
“Dance is the hidden language of the soul.”

-- Martha Graham

A short time ago, I heard that women heal by dancing. And then just days later, a friend shared how she was feeling out of sorts and restless one night. She started listening to her exercise music and found herself up and dancing. Caught in the energy of the melody and beat, she danced and danced and danced…

I remembered her experience the other day when I felt moody and depressed. So I put on a favourite, upbeat CD and surrendered to the music.

My mood lifted almost instantly. Chucking and jiving around the room, I was amazed by the many ways my body moved fluidly in perfect time with the rhythm. I didn’t have to figure out what to do – my body knew exactly what to do. And I kicked up some pretty impressive choreography!

Of course, I made sure that no one would see me. I wasn’t about to share my spontaneous dancer with an audience. But safe in the knowledge of my privacy, I revelled in true freedom and joy. Empowering? You bet!

~ Patrice

“Dancing is the loftiest, the most moving, the most beautiful of the arts, because it is no mere translation or abstraction from life; it is life itself.”

-- Havelock Ellis
