THE POWER OF NOTHING
Vicky shares perspectives and Feng Shui tips to support us in creating space that will connect us with our joy and passion. “Something’s missing from my life.” Sometimes my clients know what their dream is but most often they feel pulled towards something vague. Often they’ve invested their time and energy in others’ lives or in things they feel they ‘should’ do and are feeling something is missing. They’re concerned about having regrets. And they all have one thing in common. They discover they need to create space. This can mean making space in their physical environment or it can mean creating emotional space. And usually it’s both. One of my clients has taken early retirement. She loves having time at home by herself for the first time in her life. And having been focused on others all her life, she’s on a mission to discover who she really is. She’s cleared one of the spare bedrooms to create a room for herself and she’s allowing herself to just be in that empty room so she can feel what she would like in there. She’s on a journey back home to herself. There’s something about nothing. An empty room, an unscheduled day, a 30 minute appointment with yourself to do nothing. And by nothing I mean nothing - no TV, radio, other people talking to you. Nothing! Busyness stops you being present in your own life. It leaves no space for creativity, for hearing the whispers within you, for listening to your intuition or Higher Self. Busyness leaves no space for connecting with yourself. And, it does take courage to make space for yourself because who knows what you’ll discover. It might be a dream that niggles at you. You may even have an inkling to travel or live in another country for a while, but one thing is sure – you’re stepping into the unknown and who knows what will happen then. You will probably feel pulled towards something that brings joy and passion into your life. In Feng Shui, the area of the Bagua associated with life purpose and authenticity is the Career area. This area is represented by the water element. Water ebbs and flows and when it comes across obstacles it finds a way around them. The Career area blends who you are with what you do. It’s your ‘work’ in the world, what you are here to do – whether paid or not. It also represents passion and intuition. If your life were water, how would you describe yourself right now? Is it stagnant, a trickle, a raging torrent or something else? Is it flowing freely? When you move with the stream of life you discover something bigger than yourself is supporting you on your path. You leave struggle behind. And like water, you are constantly realigning yourself because everything is constantly changing. Are you giving yourself the space to connect with your authentic self? To connect to your heart takes disconnecting. Disconnecting from busy energy. It needs a bit of nothing. 1. Create physical space – the easiest way I know to declutter is to take everything out of a space, whether it’s a drawer, a closet or a room, and put back only what you want. Put everything in boxes or into another room or put all the clothes on your bed, clean the space and be very deliberate about what goes back in. Are you ready to commit to decluttering a specific area of your home or workspace? When will you do it? Even if it’s 20 minutes a day, you’ll soon feel the results. 2. Take time every day to do nothing. Start with 15 minutes. If you really have a hard time just being, start with something mindless, perhaps walking in nature. Let your mind go free. I like sitting in my favorite spot in my home and just watching what comes into my mind. I’ve learned to have pen and paper handy. It’s as if those thoughts just slip in there in the gap I’ve created and I need to be alert to catch them. Set the scene for inspired actions. Take some time in the morning to sit quietly and connect with your intention. Then ask yourself, what action could I take that would have the most impact in moving me towards my intention? And listen to what comes up. Sometimes it takes a bit of practice, especially if this is new. Be alert for ideas that come to you during the day too. Inspired actions are those that raise your energy and bring the greatest results. And to be inspired needs space. 3. Enhance the Career area of your home. The Career area is represented by the water element. Enhance this area to:
Remove anything that doesn’t represent your career or life intentions. And as this area represents purpose, remove anything with no purpose. Enhancements for the Career area:
You have a Career area in your home - just map the Bagua on your whole space to find this. And you also have a Career area in each room. Your home office and bedroom are particularly powerful places to position enhancements. And, it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference in Feng Shui. Are you clear about your intention for your career or life purpose? Great, keeping your intention in your heart, place one enhancement in your Career area today. ~ Vicky White ©2007 Vicky White, All Rights Reserved.
