Christchurch, Japan, what's really going on?
~ Vicky White
Before I knew it, I could feel myself being
sucked in. Our media here in New Zealand is still full of the Christchurch
earthquake (and now the Japanese one). Everywhere you look there is news
repeating itself, death tolls, stories of suffering, and a huge focus on
devastation. And even future predictions - you should hear what they're
saying about Wellington!
When we had two moderate sized earthquakes in Wellington the week after
the Christchurch one, I found myself looking around at where I was staying
and picturing the house falling off the side of the hill.
In Canada, I don't read papers any more or watch TV. I've managed to stay
away from economic gloom and doom, but I often feel I'm doing the ostrich
thing of sticking my head in the sand. I've searched for a way to have a more
inspired approach. As I noticed myself starting to feel nervous about earthquakes
in New Zealand and overwhelmed by the devastation in Japan, I realized there was
another way.
Rather than cutting my attention off completely, I can choose where I put my
attention and find the gifts in it while sending love to those involved.
Our thoughts are powerful. Here is the attention I am choosing to give to the
earthquakes in New Zealand and Japan at this time.
In New Zealand, I saw so many countries come to our aid without hesitation.
Countries who often had far less 'wealth' than us. I saw a great outpouring
of love, courage and dedication as they focused on what was really important.
I saw Australia, who we have a certain amount of rivalry with, send a huge team
to help. I saw the love between those rescued and their rescuers and the connection,
even though many didn't speak English - it wasn't needed.
I saw airlines, supermarkets, and businesses giving freely to those affected.
Every day, still, I see the generosity of New Zealanders in coming together to
raise money for those in Christchurch. I see people all over NZ opening their
homes to those who have lost theirs - and I know bonds will be formed that will
last forever.
I see that all natural disasters bring a cleansing to our Planet and bring it
closer into balance. I see that these events bring us all closer together, make us
forget less important worries for a while, give us an opportunity to open our hearts
and feel what is truly important.
I see the Japanese as being a strong and courageous people who pull together and
take care of each other. I see them as being experienced with earthquakes and know
they will become even stronger and more closely connected with each other.
I see good things coming from both these major earthquakes - a cleansing and renewal,
an opportunity to rebuild in a more conscious and life supporting way, an opportunity
to use our creativity to make different choices around energy sources, an opportunity
to make decisions based on people rather than money, and an opportunity for each of us
to remember we are one.
I see what has become of Napier, NZ, a city which experienced a devastating earthquake
in 1931. The whole city was rebuilt and today is known as the Art Deco Capital of
New Zealand. Something extraordinary arose from those ashes.
I also see these events as a wake up call to each of us to be prepared. For
those of us in earthquake zones, do we have water/food/and other things to keep us
going for 3 days if needed?
Mostly, I see the earth is rebalancing herself and she needs our support in this process.
While the earthquakes in New Zealand and now Japan have brought tremendous suffering
and devastation, and there are now concerns about radiation leaks, my question is:
how can I be of most help?
Beyond giving practical help, I believe we can support these changes by choosing
how we see them. Do we get into fear, become overwhelmed, hide our heads in the
sand and see the world as a dangerous place? Or do we send love to a planet and
people in the midst of healing and rebalancing and see something good coming from
this?
I know which one feels best to me!
